Oropher: General Facts

Nothing is said about the physical appearance of Oropher.
 
Dates:
Concerning his age it's fairly safe to assume that he was at least 4000 years old when he died. I came to this conclusion reading 'The Unfinished Tales' where it is written that he "had come among them [the Silvan Elves] with only a handful of Sindar" after the ruin of Doriath. I interpreted this as meaning that he had led the Sindar himself, an assumption that probably makes him at least a few hundred years old at this point of time. Knowing that the Last Alliance was formed in 3430 SA, you see that my guess might be true. -But, it is only a guess.
 
Name:
What I said about Oropher's age also applies to the meaning of his name -it is not certain. I searched my elven dictionaries and found 'oro' = 'high' and 'feren' = 'beech', so a possible translation of 'Oropher' might be 'High Beech'. Considering his life circumstances and philosophy this is quite fitting.
