Legolas: General Facts

Appearance:
We know that Legolas was clad in green and brown as was costumary among his people. We also know that his father had golden hair, so maybe Peter Jackson's guess about Legolas' hair color was correct. Here and there we get little details about his appearance in LotR, for example his eyes are described as bright and his hands as long and slender. Tolkien - furious when he heard people talk about Legolas as weak and not worthy of the Fellowship - described him later as 'tall as a tree, lean, extraordinarily strong'. He also mentions him to be incredibly fast and robust.

Dates:
We cannot be sure about Legolas' age, I did not even find enough information for a wild guess. Peter Jackson stated him to be 2931 years old in the movies, but there is absolutely no evidence for such a number in the books. However, the way in which Legolas sometimes casually tells of the ancient history of his people suggests that at the beginning of the WotR he might have lived a few thousand years already. Also his comment in Fangorn Forest when he says he almost feels young again himself under those trees supports this assumption. Plus, it is normal for elves to marry and get children shortly after reaching majority. Seeing that Thranduil must predate the year 1000 SA, it makes my little guess even more probable. However, Legolas's true age will never be known (which won't keep me from searching for further hints).

Hey, we even know that one! 'Legolas' means with one hundred percent certainty 'Greenleaf'.
